Students Learn Traditional Taiko Drumming

Artists in Schools

We are excited to share that our school has received a $6,700 Artists in Schools (AIS) Grant to support a two-week Japanese taiko drumming residency from May 19–29, 2026! Through this incredible opportunity, our Grade 3, 4, and 5 students will learn traditional taiko drumming techniques from Sensei Hiroshi Koshiyama and Sensei Naomi Guilbert of Fubuki Daiko (Blizzard Drums), a professional Japanese taiko group founded in Winnipeg in 1995 and renowned across North America.

Fubuki Daiko has an extremely busy performance and teaching schedule, and after being on a waiting list for three years, we are honoured to welcome them to our school finally. In preparation for the workshops, students have been learning about Japanese culture, language, and etiquette to deepen their understanding and appreciation of this unique experience.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the AIS Grant program, our dedicated staff, supportive families, and enthusiastic students for helping make this workshop possible. A very special thank you to Sensei Hiroshi and Sensei Naomi for sharing their knowledge, passion, and artistry with our students.

Arigato gozaimasu — thank you!
