Representatives from the Canada Revenue Agency and Service Canada recently made a visit to our four high schools in Brandon. They provided valuable information and addressed student inquiries regarding important services, programs, and benefits.

The Outreach Community Program encompasses various initiatives aimed at supporting different community needs. Their goal is to collaborate with communities and organizations in this case high school students in Brandon School Division:

  • Reach clients where they are; and
  • Raise awareness of Government of Canada programs, services, and benefits.

At schools, they conduct classroom presentations covering a range of topics, including:

  • Starting your first job;
  • Understanding your paycheques;
  • Key considerations when working;
  • Filing your first tax return and the benefits you can receive;
  • Saving for your future (RESP);
  • Staying safe from scams; and
  • In-Person Support Clinics.

After the presentations, tables were set up at the schools to provide the following services:

  • Verification and Updates: Students (or teachers/parents) can receive help by providing their SIN (memorized or shown) and photo ID or by answering verification questions. We can update information such as address, direct deposit, and phone number.
  • Tax Assistance: We fill out drop-off forms for free tax preparation, help sign up for a CRA My Account (if a return has been filed at least once), and answer general tax questions.
  • Newcomer Support: For those new to Canada, we assist with applying for benefits by completing an RC151 form
  • Why Should Students File Their Taxes?
  • For Working Students: They might receive money back if they overpaid into EI or CPP or if they paid income tax.
  • For Non-Working Students (17 years old): Filing taxes allows them to start receiving GST and the Carbon Rebate once they turn 19.
