5K Tree Planting

Tree Planting 5

Tara Knechtel’s grade 5 class was a Little Green Thumbs classroom with an indoor garden. They grew vegetables as their first crop (beans, cucumbers, corn, sunflowers, and tomatoes) and their second crop was tree seedlings, herbs, native plants, and strawberries.

Ms. Knechtel presented the work the class was doing with their garden to the Riverheights Parent Council last spring. Parent Council offered there help if anything was needed. Ms. Knechtel suggested trees for our school yard field, which belongs to the City of Brandon, for a shelter belt from the wind, shade, and habitats. Ms. Knechtel shared the idea in hopes of partnering with the City of Brandon to make this come to fruition. Riverheights Parent Council contacted the City of Brandon and coordinated a shelter belt of 30 trees - Elm, Linden, Aspen, and Maple. Ms. Knechtel’s grade 5 students were excited to wrap up their school year by helping plant the trees.
