Nutrition Program
Overview of our Nutrition Program
The Manitoba Universal School Nutrition Program was launched to address food insecurity among students and promote healthy eating habits. The program ensures that every student in the province has access to nutritious meals and snacks, free of charge, without any barriers such as proof of need. This initiative is part of the Manitoba government's commitment to support student learning and well-being.
This initiative is also supported through the Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba and Food for Thought Brandon Inc. Schools have made arrangements with local suppliers to provide a variety of high-quality and nutritious foods.
Types of Meals
The program provides breakfast items such as fruit, cereals, toast and hot drinks. A nutritious hot lunch is prepared and served at Noon daily. Snacks such as fruit and veggies, yogurts and cheese are also available throughout the school day. Meals are designed to meet the Moving Forward with School Nutrition Guidelines and reflect the diverse cultures of Manitoba.
The program has been shown to positively impact students' health, attendance, and academic performance. Feedback from parents and educators indicates that access to nutritious food helps students focus better in class and supports their overall well-being.
Conclusion
The Manitoba Universal School Nutrition Program is a significant step towards ensuring that all students have access to healthy food, which is essential for their learning and development. The program continues to evolve, with ongoing support from the government and community partners to meet the needs of students across the province.
