INDIGENIOUS PERSPECITVES: MMIWG2S

May 5th is recognized as the National Day of Awareness and Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and TwoSpirit People (MMIWG2S). Also known as Red Dress Day, this day is dedicated to raising awareness about the ongoing crisis of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals. It serves as a call to action to address the systemic issues that contribute to this violence and to honor the lives lost. The red dress has become a poignant symbol of the lives lost and the need for continued efforts to end this violence. There are more than 1,724 confirmed cases of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) in Canada, dating back to the 1900s, this number does not include the number of unconfirmed cases (This number highlights the severity and long-standing nature of this crisis.) Indigenous women make up 26% of all female homicide victims and 11% of missing women in Canada, despite Indigenous people comprising only 4.3% of the population Indigenous women are four times more likely to be victims of violence compared to nonIndigenous women Indigenous women are twice as likely to experience violence from their current or former partner 56% of Indigenous women have suffered physical assault, and 46% have experienced sexual assault, compared to about onethird of non-Indigenous women By wearing red on May 5th, you can help raise awareness too and contribute to the broader efforts to bring justice and healing to affected families and communities. It is a day to remember, reflect, and take meaningful action towards creating a safer society for everyone.

BOOK CLUB MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Caraval by Stephanie Garber is a fantasy novel set in a magical world where a once in a lifetime game is played. The story revolves around two sisters, Scarlett and Tella, who are invited to the game where the lines between reality and illusion is a blur. They are constantly reminded to remember that the Caraval is “only a game”. Tella gets kidnapped overnight and becomes a key figure in the high stakes game while Scarlett explores the ethereal and enchanting parts of the game. She has to unravel secrets, confront her fears, save her sister all while trying to win this mysterious game. I really like this book because of the way the author writes. She writes very majestically, and her books are very fast paced. Recommended by Menglu Lin.
